Emeritus Free Home Visits Make Autumn Brighter for Seniors
Seniors experience depression in greater numbers than their younger counterparts. And as the days get shorter and darker – and the holidays approach – it can exacerbate depression in seniors who may be may coping with the challenges of aging or losing a spouse. But there are several things that help life depression:
Exercise stimulates the growth of neurons in certain brain regions, acting as a natural mood elevator. In a recent study, 94 percent of depressed older adults showed marked improvement on depression scales after 10 weeks of tai chi.
Isolation is one of the major triggers of depression. Engaging in an activity provides both mental and physical stimulation, decreasing depression.
As human beings, we have an innate desire to interact with other people. More than just the desire to make our lives more interesting, numerous studies have concluded that socializing with others actually improves our mental and physical health.
That’s why Emeritus is helping seniors beat the blues this season. As part of our Free Home Visits program, we’re visiting seniors to ensure they have the tools and resources they need to combat depression or just to get involved and engaged in life. In addition to the home visits, we’re inviting local seniors to come visit our communities – for exercise classes, social activities, a free meal, or a pampered day at the beauty salon – all free of charge!
If you know of a local senior who could use some extra care this season, please contact us at your nearest Emeritus community.
