Alzheimer's and Dementia Care Services
It’s hard to imagine having to live with a memory disorder. How frustrating it must be to lose one’s short-term memory. That’s why Join Their Journey® is structured so that we can be with residents – wherever they are. If we join them in their moment in time, it’s much less frustrating for the resident. For example, if a resident introduces us to her husband, but it’s really her son, we don’t disagree – we don’t try to bring her into the present day and insist that it’s really her son. She can’t remember, and we need to honor her memory.
Join Their Journey is very individualized – with our activities geared to the resident’s needs and abilities. We believe each resident is capable. We simply learn as much about the resident as possible through their families, and structure their time with us around whatever time in their past they may be in at that moment. Even our life stations, placed throughout our community, are designed specifically to reflect their life histories. Everything about Oakridge – from the physical design of our community to our programs to the staff training – is tailor-made to support the special needs of our residents.
