Dementia Care Vancouver Washington

A Wonderful Active Lifestyle

Our community offers a full calendar of daily activities, including morning and afternoon exercise, puzzles, games, dominos and arts and crafts. Many residents are able to join in – others are more limited in their abilities. For those who can enjoy local outings, we schedule occasional trips – for example, fishing at a local reservoir, viewing Christmas lights during the holidays, out to eat or for walks around the Vancouver Mall. In good weather, our “Walking Club” enjoys the paths around our community or strolling around our neighborhood. Plus:

  • Many of our residents are artists, so we are especially grateful that a volunteer from the Vancouver Watercolor Association visits our community and leads our Art Club.
  • We also have a talented choir that performs at many of our special events, such as our annual Christmas party or Veteran’s Appreciation Day.
  • Each month, we bring in performers from the greater Vancouver area – a pianist, volunteers who teach residents to ballroom dance – even Elvis has performed here during our Winter Ball!

Partnering with the Local Neighborhood Community

Once a month, our community sponsors a support group, which is led by our Community Relations Director and Executive Director. The group is open to all family members, as well as to the greater Vancouver community.

We also participate with the local senior center, attending special events, such as the bi-monthly Sunday dinner dance. Not all residents are able to go, but for those who do – often as many as 20 residents – they thoroughly enjoy getting out and socializing with other seniors. Volunteers also come into our community to visit with residents, including one wonderful woman whose own loved one had Alzheimer’s and passed away.

Fine Dining

Each building has its own dining room, where residents are served home-style meals three times a day. While we offer just one main entrée at our noon meal – the main meal of the day – we can handle a wide range of special diets, from vegetarian to diabetic to mechanical soft. And if the care plan notes that the resident wishes to have peanut butter and banana sandwiches at mealtime, we strive to accommodate those individual preferences. Meals are served at 8 a.m., 11:45 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. Snacks are scheduled at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., and sandwiches, crackers and cheese, and other finger foods are always available.

Our chef is wonderful and prepares delicious comfort foods that residents associate with their younger years – pork chops, chicken and dumplings, meatloaf and mashed potatoes, for example. In the evening we serve a lighter fare – soups, chili or casseroles. At breakfast time, we serve a complete meal, with several choices – hot and cold cereal, eggs and occasional omelets, pancakes or waffles, homemade biscuits and a variety of breakfast meats. To help ensure that residents can distinguish their food on the plate, we use brightly colored tableware. Some of our residents wander while they are eating and we do our best to redirect them; others must be hand-fed. Whatever their special needs, our staff treats each resident with the utmost respect and dignity that they deserve.
