Alzheimer's and Memory Care

This is a simple promise that the staff at Emeritus at Silverdale - and throughout Emeritus Senior Living communities has shared since 2004, when our community first opened its doors. It's a simple promise to become extended family to the seniors entrusted in our care and to our residents who have chosen our community.

The Perfect Location

Emeritus at Silverdale is located in the heart of the Kitsap Peninsula, just west of Bainbridge Island – and north of Bremerton, both of which provide ferry service to Seattle. The waterfront community of Poulsbo – often called Little Norway – is just five minutes north on Route 3, and Harrison Hospital in East Bremerton is just five minutes to our south.

The spectacular Olympic Mountain National Park is about 15 miles “as the crow flies” or an easy 45-minute drive. As you’ll discover when you come by for a tour, this part of the Pacific Northwest combines jaw-dropping scenery and rolling countryside, with quaint shops, galleries and casual cafes with panoramic waterfront views. Plus the Kitsap Mall – the largest shopping complex between Seattle and Tacoma – is right here in Silverdale.

Taking our residents out into the community is a key part of making sure they are stimulated. And fortunately there’s so much to do in this part of the Pacific Northwest! Poulsbo, one of Puget Sound’s most popular destinations, has a beautiful marina and an entire German-style street that residents love to stroll along.

And right here in town is “Old Towne Silverdale,” another quaint waterfront community with restaurants, small cafes, art galleries and charming shops. JJ’s Fish House – just voted Best Fish and Chips in the region – is a favorite spot for lunch.

We also take residents to Seabeck Park, a scenic beach park on the Hood Canal. Occasionally we’ll take those residents who are able to the Naval Historical Center in Keyport – and for a ferry ride to visit the Seattle waterfront or to attend a baseball game at Seattle’s SAFECO Field.

A Wonderful Selection

Emeritus at Silverdale offers 46 studio apartments. These include 6 larger alcoves, which we call our “Friendship Suites.” Two residents who may want the companionship or whose families may wish to save on rent share these studios. All of our regular studio apartments have bathrooms; however, because people with memory impairments are at a significant risk of falling, our bathrooms don’t include showers.

We have a private spa room with jetted tub, and our staff will help residents who cannot bathe themselves or simply stand by to lend a hand in the event they need assistance. We work closely with our families to make each resident’s room as homey as possible with family photos and familiar belongings – again, so important for stimulating their memories. Memory boxes are placed in front of each room to help residents remember which apartment is theirs.

For families with loved ones who have memory disorders, there isn’t any better place for them to be than Emeritus at Silverdale. In fact, we are considered the premier memory care community on the Kitsap Peninsula. One of the reasons we have such an outstanding reputation is our Join Their Journey program, which has been designed by Emeritus specifically to address the specialized care needs of people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

In short, this program is structured on the premise that we join our residents in their reality; we don’t force them into ours. Our skilled staff has been thoroughly trained to care for this special group of people. They have incredible patience and always come to work with a smile on their faces and passion in their hearts – no matter what challenges the day may bring.

In addition, our community was designed from the ground up to support the needs of memory care residents. For example, when you first come into our building, you walk into our “Town Square, complete with faux storefronts to simulate a village from the ‘20s or ‘30s. This allows residents to feel like they are out and about in a real community – not stuck in one small space. Our building is also circular, enabling residents to easily walk around without the anxiety of feeling lost. And each of our hallways is a different color, again to help residents navigate our community.

Altogether, our building, staff and program combine to provide a calm, familiar environment that greatly minimizes confusion and anxiety – so important for people with memory loss, who often can feel frustrated, depressed and even panicky.

Strong, Caring Professional Relationships

As needed, we work with a variety of outside healthcare providers, such as Gentiva Health Services, Harrison Home Health and the Westin Group, to provide onsite physical, occupational and speech therapy. Therapists will come in every day as necessary to work with residents.

We also partner with Northwoods Lodge, a skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility. Should a resident require additional rehabilitation services beyond what can be provided onsite, they might be admitted to Northwoods for a short period of time, then return here once they are physically able. We also bring in outside hospice services as necessary.

Our Staff

"Our family" will soon be "your family" as together we care for those we love. Emeritus at Henderson takes tremendous pride in the longevity and tenure of its staff. Our community is fortunate to have many tenured staff members, ranging from four to 12 years, who are committed to making the difference for the seniors we serve. At Emeritus Senior Living, our staff truly lives our promise, "Our Family Is Committed To Yours."

Our caregivers receive extensive on-the-job training to enhance their knowledge of the Join Their Journey program, as well as attend formal quarterly training sessions to keep them up to date on the latest information and research relating to memory disorders.

As a result, they thoroughly understand the disease process, why residents act as they do and what techniques work best to communicate and redirect them in a safe, non-combative manner. Most importantly, they are truly passionate about what they do and genuinely care about getting to know each resident.

As our families often say, “We couldn’t ask for a better staff. They always perform their jobs every day with a smile on their face. They seem to really care about the residents and treat them like family.”

In addition to our caregivers, we have an experienced management team, which includes our Life Enrichment Director, Business Office Director, Executive Director, Community Relations Director, Maintenance Director, Dining Services Director and Resident Care Director, who is a registered nurse and oversees the nursing care provided by two additional Licensed Registered Nurses. Altogether we have about 60 employees – essentially a one-to-one ratio of employees to residents.

Accomplishments

Emeritus at Silverdale raised the most money in Kitsap County for the Memory Walk, which is sponsored by Alzheimer’s Association. The Memory Walk is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research.
