Sugar Land, Texas Retirement Community

A Wonderful Active Lifestyle

We offer a wide range of activities, including bingo every day. You could set your clock by our bingo games! Residents even play for dimes! Arts and crafts, brain power sessions, daily exercise, Wii, crossword puzzle, musical entertainment are always on the calendar. In addition, we have a very active Residents Council, which often comes up with projects for residents to work on together, such are reorganizing and building up our library. We go on multiple outings every month, whether to a favorite restaurant for lunch or dinner, to Wal-Mart on Mondays, to our local zoo, to the George Bush Library in College Station, to our local museums or on a scenic drive each Friday (Wednesdays for our memory care residents).

Catholic and Protestant church services are held every Sunday, and Rosary is said every Wednesday by a local priest. And we have many family events, including our butterfly release in April to honor those residents who have passed on. Something special involving families is held each month – barbeques in May, Easter egg hunts, a program for veterans on the Fourth of July, sangrias at sunset in September and holiday meals, to name a few. In fact, every Christmas, our chef out-does himself with a lavish buffet, while our resident choir entertains our residents, staff and family members.

Partnering with the Local Neighborhood Community

Recently, we hosted Art and Soul, an opportunity for our residents to showcase their artwork. Many families and members of the community joined us to enjoy the artwork and to savor delicious pralines handmade by our chef, while being entertained by one of our residents who plays the piano.

We also partner closely with the Exchange Club of Sugar Land, a national organization that does volunteer work to help seniors and veterans. Members from the club will come out to our community to call our bingo games, as well as to celebrate our residents birthdays each month.

In addition, we are very active with the local Alzheimer’s Association and participate in the Memory Walk. Our Executive Director is also a speaker on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Foundation in Fort Bend County. And she is also part of the Senior Trust Alliance, an ethical group that advocates for seniors rights. And right next door is the Chamber of Commerce, which often provides speakers to address topics of interest to our residents, for example information about the Aid and Attendance program for veterans. The general public is always welcome.

Fine Dining

Our logo is “Emeritus at Sugar Land – where Life is Sweet!” And indeed, life is sweet here at our community. Our fantastic Chef Wayne Davis, who is from New Orleans, makes pecan pralines using his grandmother’s recipe, as well as homemade key lime pie and strawberry shortcake. He has brought new meaning to our dining services. Before joining our community, Chef Wayne was the chef for Houston’s football team. One of the reasons he was drawn here is our Alzheimer’s community, where we have some younger athletes with traumatic brain injuries.

Chef Wayne prides himself on preparing very pleasing food, beautifully prepared and pleasing to eat. Every meal is served, restaurant style, on fine linen – burgundy at dinner, white for lunch – along with fine china. Residents are always given two main choices and an always available menu – memory care residents have six smaller meals a day.

Chef Wayne’s specialty is good old southern cooking, but he is also part of our Resident Council and strives to incorporate our residents’ requests and preferences into the meal plan. He can also accommodate special diets, including mechanical soft, low salt and gluten-free. If a resident has special dietary needs, that information, along with their photos, is posted in Chef Wayne’s kitchen. Snacks are served every night after supper – and residents are welcome to stop in the kitchen any time and request a snack. Every Sunday night is Sunday Sunday – a special time when residents get together to make ice-cream Sundays, and Fridays are reserved for Happy Hour. Hydration stations are also located throughout our retirement community.
