A Wonderful Active Lifestyle
Once our residents have had their breakfast, many automatically head to the activities calendars posted throughout our independent living community to see what’s going on for the day. Typically, we begin the day with chair exercises, followed by entertainment – recently we had a gospel sing-along – then on some days, we might take off for a scenic drive and lunch out at one of our residents’ favorite area restaurants. On other days, we might have a lemonade social in the gazebo, resident might engage in variety of board games or poker, or join in an activity to pot new flowers for our patio area. Throughout the week, we have several church activities, including Catholic Communion, Devotion Calvary, bible studies and non-denomination services. We also offer all kinds of entertainment, from singers, dancer and comedians, to magicians and local school children who visit every third Friday of the month to entertain us with their special talents. The volunteer group Pet Pals brings in all kinds of animals to visit with residents. We also have many special celebrations, from birthday parties, to cookouts to family holiday dinners.
Partnering with the Local Neighborhood Community
Emeritus at Cy Fair sponsors a monthly Alzheimer’s disease support group, which an outside facilitator leads. Anyone caring for a person with a memory impairment is welcome – friends, family members and the general public are all invited to attend. For the convenience of attendees, many of whom work, our support group is held in the evening on the first Tuesday of every month. In addition, we are involved in various fundraising activities for the local Alzheimer’s Association chapter, including participating in the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s, formerly known as the Memory Walk.
Our independent living community also does an extensive amount of community outreach. For example, we are participating in the Tomball Area Health and Wellness Expo, as a vendor and to provide education on dementia and related topics. We also are beginning to work with several Veteran Administration groups and plan to sponsor events in which a spokesperson from the VA comes to our community to talk about benefits available to veterans and other topics of interest. The general public is always welcome to any of our educational programs.
Fine Dining
Our three phenomenal chefs prepare three meals a day, which consistently get great reviews. In fact, recently, a family who was touring Emeritus at Cy Fair who struggling with deciding between two different communities – ours and another in the area. We invited the family to lunch, and subsequently, we had a brand new resident move in! Our chefs do use the Emeritus meal plan, but they make it their own by incorporating a lot of local cuisine, especially seafood specialties. At lunch, we offer a choice of two main entrees, as well as an always-available menu; at dinner, we offer one main entrée and the always-available menu, which includes sandwiches, hamburgers and cheeseburgers, salads and soups. Residents choose off a menu, and each meal is served to them at the table, just like in a fine restaurant. We can cater to special diets; our Dining Services Director will meet with the resident and family to make sure we meet their specific needs.
Our memory care residents, who typically eat smaller amounts at one time, are served three meals and three snacks each day. They are offered the same food as our Assisted Living residents, but typically served smaller amounts at each sitting, as they can become overwhelmed with amount of food on plate. We also provide assistance with eating, whether simply reminding the resident to eat or actually helping feed the resident.
