Emeritus at Cougar Springs Seniors Smile for Pet Therapy

Pet therapy is very special for our seniors, here at Emeritus at Cougar Springs community in Redmond, Oregon.

The benefits of having a pet brings an immense amount of joy and happiness for all of our seniors. From the sparkle in a senior's eye to the beaming smile on our seniors' faces, pet therapy makes a huge difference.

We keep treats at the front desk for the pets because of how much the seniors enjoy feeding the animals during pet therapy.

Cougar Springs also has a signature cockatoo that is brought in by our business office director for the residents to walk, talk to, or just sit and pet.

I would encourage all communities to get involved with their local Humane Society to get a list of therapy animals to be brought to visit the residents.

Animals are a bridge for communication especially in the Memory Care, body language and pleasurable smiles say it all. [ Read more ]

Seniors Enjoy Famous Chicken Dinner Restaurant

Residents of Emeritus at Carlsbad visited the Famous Chicken Dinner Restaurant located in the City of Buena Park. Since June 1934, it's been the same story every day: locals, tourists and folks "just passing through" start lining up on Grand Avenue for Cordelia's famous fried chicken.

Of course, back then Mrs. Knott did all the cooking and her three daughters served the five-table Tea Room. Since 1934, over 20,000,000 guests have eaten chicken dinners in the famous restaurant. In fact, the restaurant bearing Mrs. Knott's name has grown into one of the country's largest full-service family eateries.

The Residents say that Mrs. Knott's Famous chicken dinners are something to crow about just as they were that Wednesday afternoon in June back in 1934. The menu still features the same famous chicken, biscuits, and boysenberry pie.

Each dinner is made from the "just-right" plump birds she insisted upon, and the fixin’s still include lighter-than-air buttermilk biscuits, fluffy mashed potatoes, rich chicken gravy and mouth-watering farm-fresh vegetables. The sheer goodness of the platters of piping hot chicken keeps the residents coming back time after time. They always know they'll sit down to a lunch that is an unforgettable treat, at prices that make the biggest family seem small.

Emeritus at Carlsbad Family's Letter to the Executive Director

"My Mother's 90th Birthday Celebration..."

Dear Mr. McCarthy,

Last year, we began our plans to celebrate my mother's 90th birthday party. The party was all planned and we had her friends, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren from Hawaii, Boston, Denver and San Francisco, all committed to coming to this event.

We never imagined that a year later, her circumstances would bring her to Emeritus and that we would be contemplating canceling the celebration. Concerned about what to do, we called Emeritus and we were referred to Lorena Anderson. She immediately reassured us that Emeritus was committed to their residents and that she would work closely with us to make this event happen.

Lorena was extremely helpful. She suggested the room, gave us ideas on catering and helped with decorations. She even volunteered to play the harp for the party. (My mother loves Irish ballets and Lorena played her some beautiful Irish folk songs.) Her playing was definitely one of the highlights of the party. We truly had a sense that she was helping us not just because it was her job, but because she truly cared for the residents and their happiness.

Words cannot express our thankfulness to Lorena Anderson for playing such an important role in my mother's 90th birthday. Her contribution added tremendously in making this event such a successful and memorable one. We want to thank the staff at Emeritus and especially Lorena for all their hard work and dedication and most of all for being so loving and caring.

Thank you Lorena and Emeritus for making Helen Tryon's 90th birthday such a milestone and for providing such wonderful care for my mother while she was there.

Sincerely,
Glenn, Donna, Cathy and Caroline Tryon (Helen's children) [ Read more ]

Oakbridge Seniors Enjoy Day Trip to the Farm

Great times at Parksdale Farm!

Our residents really enjoyed eating strawberry shortcake at Parksdale Farm. Living close to Plant City, which is known for the Florida Strawberry Festival, has its advantage.

Several of the residents went on an outing for milkshakes, strawberry cookies and the famous shortcake; a few ate the whole bowl.

Life Enrichment Director, Sonya Gonzalez plans the fun day trip for our Emeritus at Oakbridge seniors every year. We have already been asked if we will be making a second bus run for another day out before the berries are gone - of course we will.

We love the interaction between the staff and the residents along for the trip. We also had several family members show up to enjoy spending a day with their loved ones. [ Read more ]
