Emeritus at Rockford Seniors Talk to Author Kristin Hannah

Emeritus at Rockford started a book club! The first book they read was Kristin Hannah’s Home Front, a story about a woman who, in addition to being a wife and mother, is a Blackhawk pilot in the National Guard who is called to serve a tour of duty in Iraq. It is a dramatic exploration of the toll war takes on an ordinary American family.

But instead of just talking about the book, Life Enrichment Director Sarah Swain went one step further and emailed the author to see if we would be able to talk to her over the phone and discuss the book with her. Ms. Hannah agreed and on March 11, the Rockford Book Club spent nearly 30 minutes on the phone with the book’s author! She was kind enough to offer Emeritus at Rockford free books and audio books.

If you would like to join the Emeritus at Rockford Book Club, please let Sarah know. Their next book is The Notebook, a story of young love before, during and after World War II. We look forward to having you in the group. Happy reading! [ Read more ]

Murray Senior Living Community Launches Senior Outreach Program

10,000 Meals for Seniors in 60 Days

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, nearly one in ten seniors in America suffers from poor nutrition. This can exacerbate problems already common among seniors, including depression, improper healing, and a depressed immune system.

Nemo Jackson, a member of the Locust Grove Baptist Church, was the first recipient of a hot home cooked meal during the 10,000 meals in 60 days program by Emeritus Senior Living. This visit was made on her 93rd birthday.

Emeritus at Rancho Solano Makes a Difference

Join us, as we help 10,000 Seniors in 60 Days!

According the American Academy of Family Physicians, nearly one in ten seniors in America suffers from poor nutrition. This can exacerbate problems already common among seniors, including depression, improper healing, and a depressed immune system.

Emeritus Senior Living, the nation’s largest assisted living and memory care provider, is helping combat this problem by delivering 10,000 meals to seniors in 60 days and visiting with them to ensure they are able to get the nutrition they need every day.

“Seniors may not get the nutrition they need for a variety of reasons,” says Steve Sacco, Senior Director of Dining Services. “For some, it’s due to a lack of financial resources; for others, a lack of reliable transportation. And in many cases, isolation and depression have caused seniors to lose interest in cooking and eating healthfully.”

Emeritus at Cougar Springs Seniors Smile for Pet Therapy

Pet therapy is very special for our seniors, here at Emeritus at Cougar Springs community in Redmond, Oregon.

The benefits of having a pet brings an immense amount of joy and happiness for all of our seniors. From the sparkle in a senior's eye to the beaming smile on our seniors' faces, pet therapy makes a huge difference.

We keep treats at the front desk for the pets because of how much the seniors enjoy feeding the animals during pet therapy.

Cougar Springs also has a signature cockatoo that is brought in by our business office director for the residents to walk, talk to, or just sit and pet.

I would encourage all communities to get involved with their local Humane Society to get a list of therapy animals to be brought to visit the residents.

Animals are a bridge for communication especially in the Memory Care, body language and pleasurable smiles say it all. [ Read more ]

Seniors Enjoy Famous Chicken Dinner Restaurant

Residents of Emeritus at Carlsbad visited the Famous Chicken Dinner Restaurant located in the City of Buena Park. Since June 1934, it's been the same story every day: locals, tourists and folks "just passing through" start lining up on Grand Avenue for Cordelia's famous fried chicken.

Of course, back then Mrs. Knott did all the cooking and her three daughters served the five-table Tea Room. Since 1934, over 20,000,000 guests have eaten chicken dinners in the famous restaurant. In fact, the restaurant bearing Mrs. Knott's name has grown into one of the country's largest full-service family eateries.

The Residents say that Mrs. Knott's Famous chicken dinners are something to crow about just as they were that Wednesday afternoon in June back in 1934. The menu still features the same famous chicken, biscuits, and boysenberry pie.

Each dinner is made from the "just-right" plump birds she insisted upon, and the fixin’s still include lighter-than-air buttermilk biscuits, fluffy mashed potatoes, rich chicken gravy and mouth-watering farm-fresh vegetables. The sheer goodness of the platters of piping hot chicken keeps the residents coming back time after time. They always know they'll sit down to a lunch that is an unforgettable treat, at prices that make the biggest family seem small.
