Excerpt from Kelly Scott's article, "Senior Prom Night Rewards for Seniors and Teens Linger for Years" on Senior ParentsPlace.com:

A Night for the Ages

Come prom night, the lobby at the senior living community is transformed into a grand ballroom. Dance music from every decade fills the halls. The students pick up their dates at 6:30 p.m. sharp, pin them with a corsage or boutonniere, pose for the prom photographer, and then hit the dance floor.

This event is one of the highlights of the year for both groups, but the more we learn about the mixing of generations, the more we see that the positive effects go way beyond one night. In fact, several recent studies show that these intergenerational programs offer staggering and lasting benefits for everyone involved.

For the teens, they gain a new sense of respect, understanding and compassion toward the older generation. Social and communication skills improve, as well as increased academic performance and better school attendance. Even more compelling: Student groups involved in these programs show a decrease in violent behavior and incidence of drug use.
