Media Statement

At approximately midnight on Tuesday, June 7, 2011, an electrical transformer caught fire outside Emeritus at San Marcos, a senior living community. The fire spread to the front awning and roof of our building.

The fire department was contacted and arrived promptly, as well as the local police department and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) from the neighboring hospital.

Our trained staff immediately moved the residents to a safe part of the building. Two residents received minor cuts when they stepped on broken glass – the result of police officers breaking a window to gain entry. They were promptly treated by the EMTs.

Because of the smoke and fire damage, 21 residents have now been taken home by their families and six have relocated to a part of the building that wasn’t impacted. We are assessing the damage and will begin cleanup and repairs immediately. We will also continue to work with the Fire Department to determine when it’s safe to occupy the part of the community that was damaged by the fire.

As always, resident health, safety and security at Emeritus at San Marcos are our top priorities. We would like to thank our staff for responding quickly and efficiently, as well as the San Marcos Fire Department, San Marcos Police Department, and the EMTs for their quick response and assistance.
