Contest Submission by Kathy E.: Grandma's Worst Date Ever

By: Kathy E.

This is a short story of a date gone wrong by the words of a parent to a teenage daughter.

My daughter had informed my husband and me that she had a date on Friday night after a high school game and was asking our permission to go out with a young man from her school. She was a 17 year old senior and this young man was 18 and also a senior at the same high school. We told her of course you can go out after the game, but first we must meet the young man and we reminded her of her curfew time. She agreed and went merrily on her way.

On Friday late afternoon prior to the game she was getting ready, and seemed to be putting extra attention to her make-up and clothing, but still within the boundaries we had expected of her. When her date arrived at our door she let him in, and as we sat in our living room she introduced him to us. My husband shook his hand and started asking the normal questions any parent would ask. What sports do you play, and what college have you chosen to attend?

When they were about to leave my husband wish them a nice evening and stood up facing this young man, while our daughter went to get her coat and purse he stated; “ young man I have 3 rules for dating my daughter”

1. Have her home on time.
2. No drinking or drugs.
And 3. “Whatever you do to her I will do to you”.

This young man looked at my husband with a frightening look that had me laughing under my breath. They left and shortly after the football game ended she came through the door, slammed and stated “that was the worst date ever”.

He sat a foot away from me, folded his arms, and barely talked to me, and then decided that he needed to get home because he had to work early in the morning”

“Dad what did you say to him ?” Now that she is older, and about to be married we have finally told her what Dad said to this young man, we have always gotten a laugh out of this statement, but I can tell you he used it many times with her dating teenage years.
