Contest Submission by Jacque S.: Grandma's Worst Date Ever

By Jacque S.

I am submitting this story on behalf of my mother, a grandmother of four.

On her first date in over 16 years, my mom experienced what has to be one of the worst possible outcomes. A friend shared my mom’s phone number with an older, single man she worked with. He promptly called my mom and asked her out to dinner. In true female fashion, my mom was nervous about what to wear and what she should talk about. She fretted all week with her hair and eventually made an appointment to have it done the day before. She worried that she’d put on too much weight and that he wouldn’t find her attractive. The day of, she was sick to her stomach with butterflies and anxious about meeting this man.

She showed up to the restaurant right on time to find her fellow already seated. They ordered steaks and talked about their jobs and their hobbies while they waited for dinner. On just the second or third bite of steak, he choked. My mom, a nurse, prepared herself to rescue him via the Heimlich Maneuver. He kept coughing, though forcefully and she waited. In the end, he vomited all over his plate, their table and the floor. The mess had to be cleaned up by the wait staff and, as my mom puts it: “The date was pretty much over at that point.” This happened just over the weekend and it’s still up in the air as to whether they’ll try again. For now, my mom is thinking that he was probably just as nervous as she was and that next time, she’ll recommend soup!
