A Wonderful Active Lifestyle
We offer a wide array of activities designed specifically to residents’ interests and capabilities. These include a variety of exercise-related activities, such as Tai Chi classes, given by an outside instructor three times a month, and our walking group, which loves to stroll through the Sellwood neighborhood, weather permitting. We have an active gardening group, which grows herbs, flowers and vegetables in our raised beds located behind our senior living community. Our residents are also very committed to all kinds of activities that promote intellectual stimulation and memory, including crossword puzzles, brainteasers and word games.
We also recently purchased a Wii, which has already become popular with residents, who particularly love to play Wii bowling, tennis and golf. All kinds of social activities are held in our Coca-Cola room, including parties, bingo and ice cream socials. Volunteers often come into our community to lead arts and crafts activities, which are held in our fourth floor Activities Center. In addition, a large percentage of our residents are men, so we offer several activities geared specifically to their interests, including our new Men’s Club and outings just for the guys. Pastors and ministers from our residents’ own churches occasionally visit with residents, sometimes for a prayer session, other times to read the Bible.
Partnering with the Local Neighborhood Community
At least once a week, we will invite a group of entertainers into our senior living community. One week we might have a piano player or storyteller; another week, it could be a magician, a comedian, someone giving an art class or even a chorus group from a local school or church. It’s really up to our residents; in fact, our diverse range of entertainment is a direct reflection of their many interests. We also occasionally bring in speakers, for example, an author who has just written a book from which they will read excerpts. We do our best to schedule whatever type of entertainment clicks with our residents!
Many volunteers from the surrounding community and local schools enjoy coming into Sellwood Landing and visiting with residents. Often they’ll lead a variety of arts and crafts projects, from joining with residents to make greeting cards to constructing an entire dollhouse. We also occasionally have “pet therapy” sessions, with a family member or volunteer from the community bringing in their pets for our residents to enjoy. Occasionally, Rojo, a trained lama, will make a visit!
Fine Dining
Our residents and family members rave about our food, which typically features old-fashioned comfort, easy-to-eat food, like roast chicken, meat loaf, pot roast and macaroni and cheese. We serve three meals a day, restaurant style, with lunch our main meal of the day. At both lunch and dinner, we offer two different entrees that change daily. We can also accommodate special dietary requirements, including soft diets, low salt diets and carb-controlled diets for our residents with diabetes. There is a hospitality area in our lobby, where we serve snacks and beverages throughout the day. Just off our main dining room is a private dining room available for residents to share meals with family and friends.
