A Wonderful Active Lifestyle
Our full-time Life Enrichment Director keeps our residents busy with all kinds of different activities, including bingo, art classes, current event discussions, exercise programs and weekly Catholic and non-denominational church services. We also have Happy Hour once a week, and bring in many outside groups – bands, piano players and other musical performers – on a regular basis. Every month, our family members are invited to join us for some type of activity – a dinner, a gathering with a social hour, an Easter egg hunt, to name just a few. (Family members are also welcome to join us for a meal at any time.) We also take residents on many outings, from weekly shopping trips to scenic drives to explore Reno and the surrounding areas.
Our memory care activities are centered on specific activities that are meaningful to an individual resident. For example, if someone loved to bake before they become impaired, we’ll use baking as a reminiscing activity. One of our residents was a dentist before moving here, so we’ll talk to him about topics that will help him recall his career. Another one of our residents speaks French and our staff is working on learning the language; we really do try to customize our program to their needs! We also offer many musical events, as most of our residents love music and respond well when we bring in outside groups.
Partnering with the Local Neighborhood Community
We partner with several groups in the community, including Ronald MacDonald House, with which our residents work on service projects. We also work with one of the low-income agencies in town and recently did a clothing drive. We also collaborate with our local Alzheimer’s Association, which provides additional training for our staff, and each year, we join the association for its annual Memory Walk to raise money for Alzheimer’s research. In addition, outside groups, such as the Lions Club, meet here once a month.
Fine Dining
We serve three meals a day, restaurant style, with our dining staff waiting on residents just like in a fine restaurant. A main entrée and alternative is offered, as well as an always-available menu that includes sandwiches, soup, salad – we just installed a new salad bar – fresh fruit and desert. Our Dining Services Director takes personal pride in being in tune with residents and their choices and participates in monthly meetings to make sure residents’ needs are met. In addition, two of our three chefs have been with us since we opened 14 years ago.
Snacks are available throughout the day and may be part of an activity – for example, a social hour with family members. The kitchen is always open and residents are welcome to stop by and ask the chef for something special. Whether they’d like dessert or a quick sandwich, we will always make sure they are accommodated. We can also accommodate special diets, from consistent carbohydrate diets to low salt and even vegetarian.
In memory care, the food we serve is similar, but typically includes more soft or pureed items and finger foods. In addition, because people with memory impairments can easily lose weight, we serve three meals and three snacks a day. To make it easier for them to see their food and easier for them to eat, we serve their meals on multi-colored colored plates, and we use lighter weight glasses and special utensils. We also have monthly weigh-ins and take immediate action if a resident is having a weigh issue.
