A Campus Community
Canterbury Court and Canterbury Gardens offers the full continuum of senior living options – from retirement and assisted living through memory care – all on one lovely two-acre campus in a rural area of Harlingen, Texas. Four roads meander through our property, with our three-story independent apartment community situated a short distance from our assisted living community in a more secluded section of campus. A full wing of our assisted living community is dedicated to our memory care residents.
With three communities all located on one campus, residents have the security of knowing they can remain right here should their needs change over time. We can facilitate moves throughout our campus with very little disruption. Because residents can remain in the environment that supports them best, they don’t have to change what’s most important: their friendships and familiar surroundings.
The Perfect Location
Located at the southernmost tip of Texas in the Rio Grande Valley, at the intersection of Highways 77 and 83, Harlingen has been designated a Certified Retirement Community by the state of Texas. One reason is its semi-tropical climate offering year-round activities, including the white sands of South Padre Island and Mexico for dining and shopping. Harlingen is also known as the “Health Care Center of the Valley.” And in fact, our community is located between Valley Baptist Medical Center and Harlingen Medical Center, as well as close to many rehabilitation centers, skilled nursing facilities, doctors’ offices and home health agencies. Any healthcare service our residents may require is within a short drive.
With so much going on in the surrounding area, we take our residents out often – for country drives, to all kinds of restaurants, including their favorites on beautiful South Padre Island – one of the country’s top vacation spots. And right here in town, we take full advantage of the Jackson Street historical district, with its old-world charm, many art galleries, live theater, quaint shops, the Jackson Street Market and museums. There are also outlet shopping malls nearby in Mercedes – one of our best attended monthly destinations. In addition, Harlingen is home to the Marine Military Academy, which hosts the original full-size casting of the Iwo Jima Monument erected in Arlington National Cemetery. We are also known as a birder’s paradise! Harlingen is the top birding destination is the U.S. and hosts the Annual Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival.
A Wonderful Selection
Our three-story retirement community offers 55 apartments, including one-bedroom, one bedroom deluxe, two-bedroom and two-bedroom deluxe units. All apartments include a dining room and full kitchen, living room and screened-in balcony or patio, walk-in closets, one or two bedrooms, and at least one full bathroom with a walk-in shower and a 24-hour emergency call system. Our retirement community also has its own beautiful dining room with high ceilings, an elegant front lobby and several outdoor areas, including a patio where residents enjoy occasional barbeques.
Assisted living offers 65 apartments, including studios and one-bedroom units. Residents looking to share costs and companionship may choose our Friendship Suite option. Each unit is bright and spacious and includes a kitchenette with a mid-sized refrigerator and microwave, along with a large wheelchair- and scooter-accessible bathroom with a walk-in shower. Several common areas are available to residents: a front lobby and activities area, a game room, meeting room for parties, a private dining room, a chapel and of course, the community’s own dining room.
Our memory care community, which is located in a separate wing of our assisted living community, offers 36 studio apartments, most of which are semi-private. (Residents and their families can request a private room.) Residents have their own dining room, large activities room and a secured courtyard, where they can enjoy being outdoors in a safe and supervised environment. The entire memory care wing was recently updated with new paint and carpet.
Strong, Caring Professional Relationships
Whatever healthcare service a resident may need is within minutes from our community – not surprising, considering Harlingen has been dubbed the “Health Care Center of the Rio Grande Valley.” So residents can feel safe knowing some of the state’s best medical facilities are all within an easy drive. In addition, home health and rehabilitation providers from the immediate area come into our community, offering such services as physical and occupational therapy here in the comfort of the resident’s own home or in one of our many common areas. Hospice is also always welcome. As necessary, we can take residents to various rehabilitation facilities in the area should they require more intensive therapy. A few physicians make house calls – and local home health agencies occasionally sponsor health fairs at our community, offering a variety of free screenings to our residents.
Our well-rounded and dedicated staff, from our two Executive Directors to our licensed nurse and Memory Care director, have been here for several years. The reason for such longevity is simple. Our staff loves what they do! Our families often tell us how much they appreciate our devotion to their loved ones. They clearly see that we enjoy coming to work and most importantly, that we put residents first. Even our community pets are treated with great care. One resident calls us “Canterbury Kennels” because we are so pet-friendly. We know how important pets are to our residents and believe that pets – especially dogs and cats – offer the best therapy. So even if a resident is unable to walk his or her dog, we’ll step in and provide the care required so that their beloved pet can remain here with them, in their own homes. Kindness, commitment, compassion and experience are the hallmarks of our devoted staff!
