A Wonderful Place to Live
We are a unique single-story retirement community that offers four different neighborhoods, each providing different levels of services based upon the residents’ abilities. Each neighborhood is its own community, with 13 studio apartments and its own kitchen, dining room and living room. All four neighborhoods open onto a general courtyard area, where “life stations” are placed to provide a sense of familiarity. The neighborhoods are designed in a square with connecting hallways that enable residents to easily wander around without getting lost. A spacious community center is located in the back of the building and is available for all residents to enjoy.
As part of the Emeritus family of memory care communities, we participate in a program called, Join Their Journey. This is an individualized program that allows us to join the resident wherever they are in their time. If they are recalling days long past – when they were in their 30s – we are right there with them. Join Their Journey provides many one-on-one activities that we do with residents to help promote memory. We also have a wide range of group activities, which helps stimulate residents in a different way by giving them opportunities to socialize. Group activities include stretch and flex, trivia and bingo games, puzzles and arts and crafts, among many other activities. Join Their Journey pays particular attention to making sure all activities are geared to the ability of the residents – and that all residents are able to participate in some form of activity, even if it is something as simple as separating blocks into different containers. We also take those residents who are able on weekly outings – often to a local restaurant for lunch.
Active Community Relationships
Each week, Emeritus at Sandy Springs Place sponsors an Alzheimer’s support group, which is led by outside experts, including a geriatric care manager and social worker. The general community is always welcome to attend. We also participate in the Metro-Atlanta’s annual "Memory Walk" sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association. The Walk to End Alzheimer's is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. In addition, we occasionally offer “virtual dementia” tours, to which we invite the community. This is an outstanding opportunity for medical professionals, referral sources and family members, who work or live with the memory impaired, to gain insight into what it’s like to have dementia.
We offer a monthly educational series to which we invite an outside memory impairment specialist who addresses such topics of interest as the latest research in Alzheimer’s disease, “Is it memory loss or just old age?,” among many other pertinent subjects. Anyone who works with or is involved with someone who has a memory impairment is invited to attend.
