What are the Signs and Symptoms of CJD?

Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease symptoms have a rapid onset and causes a quickly progressing dementia which may include memory problems, impaired thinking, personality changes, and depression.[1][5] Other CJD symptoms may include the following:

  • Impaired vision
  • Coordination problems
  • Insomnia
  • Involuntary muscle movements
  • Speech problems

As the disease progresses, mental decline becomes more severe. Ultimately, the patient develops heart or lung failure, pneumonia or other infection that results in death. Most persons with CJD die within a year of developing the disease. The disease is always fatal.
