Osteoporosis refers to a reduction in bone mass, or the thinning of the bones, due to calcium and protein depletion in the bones, which can often result in back pain and fractured or broken bones.[1][2] Bone density tests can detect osteoporosis and lead to various treatments, such as increasing calcium and other minerals essential to bone growth in one’s diet, and estrogen or hormone supplements for post-menopausal women.[1]
The United States Preventive Services Task Force suggests that women aged 60 and over have routine bone density tests performed in order to prevent bone fractures.[2]
