Communication Tips for Caregivers After a Loved One has Moved into a Senior Living Community

Communicating with a loved one who has dementia can be frustrating, and at times confusing. These are some general tips to consider when communication just after having moved into a senior living community.

  • Be mindful of your body language.
    • Maintain eye contact
    • Display a calm and gentle manner
    • Utilize a gentle touch such as hand holding or a pat on the back to communicate encouragement and maintain their focus
  • Speak slowly and enunciate your words.
  • Avoid negative commands such as "Don't" or "You shouldn't".
  • Avoid questions that require a strong short term memory, such as "What did you have for lunch today?"
  • Utilize your loved one's long term memory, such as "I hear you are a wonderful cook".
  • Give simple instructions with one step at a time.
  • Respond as though you understand, even if at times you do not.
  • Speak in a respectful manner to your loved one, avoid a condescending tone.
  • Avoid arguing and ordering the person around.
