A Wonderful Active Lifestyle
Our Memory Care Director and activities staff work hard to make each day special and different by offering a wide range of daily activities. Some are designed for smaller groups and take place in each neighborhood – for example, getting a small group involved with an exercise program or working on puzzles, providing manicures, engaging residents in one-on-one conversation in which they have the chance to reminisce and organizing neighborhood barbeques. We also take residents on walks around our amazing property and offer all kinds of arts and crafts and memory games.
In addition, we offer activities that involve the entire senior living community – church services, bible studies led by an outside volunteer from a local church, musical programs, and a men’s coffee group, to name just a few. Many community members volunteer here, such as local Boys and Girls Scout groups, who often sing for residents. And our own family members are also very involved with our community; in fact, they often organize many of our events – from bringing in an outside orchestra group to helping us organize our winter ball. Two large activities rooms are available for community-wide events.
Partnering with the Local Neighborhood Community
We partner closely with the local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and in concert with them, we offer monthly family discussion groups here at Emeritus at Colorado Springs. Family members, staff and the general public are always welcome. Our staff, along with many family members, also get together each year to participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer's. We also participate in Memories in the Making – an annual art show featuring drawings and paintings done by people with Alzheimer’s. To prepare for the show, a local artist visits our community once a month and leads painting and drawing classes with residents. Last year, work from five of our residents was featured, and the art show invitation for our local chapter – a lovely still life of tulips – was created by one of our residents!
In addition, experts from a local hospice agency comes to our community on a monthly basis to conduct lunch and learns. Each month focuses on a specific topic related to Alzheimer’s or dementia. Again, the Colorado Springs community is always welcome to attend these informative events.
Fine Dining
Each of the four neighborhoods has its own dining room, which provides a smaller, more intimate dining experience for our residents. Our Dining Services Director is absolutely wonderful and our food, we’ve been told again and again, is phenomenal! Three meals and three regular snacks are served each day. And each month, residents can choose the menu for one main meal. The meal of the month often features such favorites as fried chicken. In addition to our regular meals and snacks, food is always available in each of the neighborhood kitchens. We can also handle most special dietary needs, including no salt, mechanical soft and diabetic diets. Finger foods are also very popular and served anytime, allowing residents to wander and eat at the same time. We also do monthly weigh-ins to be sure residents are maintaining a healthy weight.
Because people with memory impairments often have difficulty with depth perception and thus, distinguishing food on their plates, our meals are served on colorful Fiesta ware – each neighborhood has its own color scheme.
