Assisted Living Services
Before a resident moves into Emeritus at Colorado Springs, we work closely with the family members to develop a personalized care plan. For example, the care plan might include specific cuing techniques that work best for that resident, the activities they enjoy most, their medical history, among many other specific details. The care plan continually evolves, so that as the resident’s health status changes, the appropriate level of assisted living services is always provided.
We also strive to keep residents as independent as possible – even those who are non-verbal. If the resident is able to do a task on their own, we want to make sure they continue doing that task. For example, if the resident is able to brush their teeth on their own, but needs some cuing, we simply offer appropriate reminders or show them how to put the toothpaste on the toothbrush. They may need help with dining services; but rather than feed them, we’ll sit down and show them how to use a fork. Of course, some residents with late-stage dementia do require everything to be done for them, and in such instances, we can provide the full range of assisted living services as necessary. Should a resident require more specialized health services than we can offer here, we will direct the family to a local skilled nursing facility, including our own sister community, Emeritus at Bear Creek.
Alzheimer's Care Services
As an Emeritus community, we follow Join Their Journey – a wonderful program created especially for residents with memory impairments. The idea behind the program is to join the resident wherever they are. Instead of trying to bring the resident into present-day reality, we join them in their reality. Ff the resident thinks he or she is 30, has young children and is worried about them, we might remind them that the children are in school and taken care of. By joining them in their time frame, we don’t send them spiraling down into frustration and anxiety. Every resident is at a different place in his or her lives; our goal is to help them enjoy that day – no matter what their reality. Life stations are also placed throughout the community to provide familiar settings that can evoke memories – a baby life station for the new mom, a music area with a radio and comfortable seats, a dress-up station with ladies outfits, for example.
