Phoenix, Arizona Memory Care Community Lifestyle

A Wonderful Active Lifestyle

There truly is no other memory care community just like Sunshine Village. Just step inside our beautiful community and you’ll immediately understand why. Seven large individual group cottages are situated in a park-like setting with grass, flowers, mature trees and pathways. The entire area, which spans about 10 acres, is fully secured and monitored by our staff. Residents have the freedom to come and go, just like they might in their own hometown neighborhood – yet they are completely safe and always under close supervision. As one family member wrote, “They have a ton of outside area for mom to walk and wander. All the other places felt like a prison or a mental health unit. Mom isn't crazy; she has dementia! She loves it there, and they take such good care of her.” In addition, as a dedicated memory care community with some of the region’s top memory care experts, we are able to care for people with all kinds of memory disorders, from Alzheimer’s and Lewy body dementia to vascular-related dementia caused by stroke. And since we are a dedicated memory care community, none of our residents feel out of place here. They are surrounded by people who have similar needs and issues, which makes a big difference in terms of their happiness, comfort and ability to thrive.

From holiday parties and themed events to live entertainment, our full-time staff of Life Enrichment Directors and Assistant Directors plans all kinds of activities for fun, relaxation and stimulation. A typical day’s schedule could include a “Meet & Greet,” coffee & news hour, pet therapy, beach ball exercise, a visit from Pastor Bob, Bingo and watercolor painting in the afternoon, followed by puzzles and brain games in the cottages. Some afternoons, residents might also enjoy a movie or watching an old-time television show, such as Lawrence Welk. “Porch visits” give residents the opportunity to gather at each other’s cottages and enjoy companionship and conversation.

Many times a month we offer live entertainment, including Elvis impersonators, jugglers, magicians, karaoke and local school groups, who visit our community during special times throughout the year. Residents also enjoy tending our raised flower beds, as well as going on scheduled outings for pizza or pie at a favorite nearby restaurant. For residents who don’t like group activities, our staff makes it a point to spend one-on-one time with them, often reminiscing about their past and looking at photos together. We also have a weekly Catholic communion and non-denominational services twice a week. And birthdays and holiday are always celebrated in grand style.

Partnering with the Local Neighborhood Community

Sunshine Village is a leader in community involvement, hosting numerous support groups and education seminars each year. This includes working with local hospice and home health organizations, who come into our community to educate our family and staff members on various dementia-related topics, such as second-generation dementia and how to deal with the loss of the person they once knew, called “pre-grief.” We also work with Veteran’s groups to help educate our families on benefits that their loved one may qualify for. And in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association, we sponsor quarterly Alzheimer’s support groups, as well as participate in its annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s, the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research.

The Sunshine Village family welcomes many community groups, including the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, high school groups, local choirs, religious groups and Alzheimer's support groups, as well as numerous pet therapy animals and a wide variety of volunteers.

Fine Dining

All of our meals are served family style in the dining room of each cottage. Chef Michael and his team put extra attention to ensure every meal is delicious and nutritious. Our residents are “meat and potatoes” people, so we do our best to serve them the kind of foods they most enjoy, from spaghetti and meatballs to meatloaf and mashed potatoes to hot dogs and hamburgers. We can also accommodate virtually any special diet, including meeting the needs of those residents who are unable to use utensils. All meals are prepared in our main kitchen, which is located in the clubhouse, then brought to each cottage in hot carts. Snacks and beverages are always available in each cottage throughout the day.
